TREATY NOW!
The time has come to say fair's fair...
Australia has a long history of poorly representing, acknowledging and supporting its Indigenous people. A national treaty offers the opportunity to rectify these injustices and to build a harmonious future for all Australians, together.
TREATY NOW!
Treaty Now! is committed to achieving a national treaty between the Australian government and the Indigenous people of Australia. We will build community awareness of, and support for a treaty. Simultaneously, we will use your support and commitment to put pressure on government decision makers. We will not give up until Australia signs a national treaty with its Indigenous peoples!
WHY DO WE NEED A TREATY?
Australia is regularly called upon at an International level to address the massive human rights abuses that are committed against our Indigenous people. In addition, the inequity that faces indigenous people due to a lack of recognition, respect, and support for their culture results in a serious division within the greater Australian community. A treaty provides an opportunity to recognise, respect and embrace Australia’s Indigenous heritage and therefore, offers a path forward in unity for the greater Australian community.

What is a Treaty?
A treaty is a formal and binding agreement between two sovereign parties. A treaty in Australia is proposed between the Indigenous Australian’s and the Australian Government and it would set out negotiated and agreed terms by which both parties can live and prosper in harmony in Australia. A treaty outlines the rights, responsibilities, obligations and opportunities that each party will have and agree to.

What would a treaty achieve?
In the Australian context a treaty would recognise the sovereign rights of Indigenous peoples, empowering them to self-determination, greater control over their land and equal decision-making power with the Australian government. If Australia is serious about its concerns for the welfare of Indigenous people it is critical that a treaty be enacted.

What does the world think?
The most recent Universal Periodic Review of Australia by the UN highlighted that absence of a treaty with the Indigenous people of Australia was of considerable concern. Australia is now the only Commonwealth country that does not have a treaty with its Indigenous peoples.
